How much does each bar weigh?
Barbell, trap bar, safety squat bar, football bar, log, axle and farmers handles: typical weights, and what ours weigh.
If your numbers don't match from gym to gym, the bar is usually why. Specialty bars and strongman implements aren't standardized, so the same lift can be 20 lb different depending on the brand. Here's what to expect, and what the bars at our gym in Davie weigh.
Standard barbell
A men's Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg, which is 44 lb, usually rounded to 45. A women's Olympic bar weighs 15 kg, about 33 lb. Cheap "standard" one-inch bars at home gyms can be much lighter.
Trap bar (hex bar)
Trap bars commonly weigh anywhere from about 45 to 75 lb, depending on the brand and whether it has raised handles. Ours weighs 55 lb.
Safety squat bar (SSB)
Safety squat bars usually run 60–75 lb because of the padded yoke and cambered ends. We have two: a 60 lb bar and a heavier 75 lb bar.
Football bar / Swiss bar
Multi-grip neutral bars often weigh 40–55 lb. Ours is 50 lb. The arched neutral-grip bar, built for pressing, is lighter at 25 lb.
Strongman log
Logs range from light training logs around 60 lb to competition logs well over 100 lb, depending on diameter and length. Ours weighs 100 lb empty.
Axle
An axle is a thick, non-rotating bar, usually 2 inches across. Axles weigh around 25–35 lb. Ours is 25 lb, about 20 lb lighter than a barbell, so remember to adjust your plates.
Farmers handles
Farmers handles are loaded and weighed per hand. Empty handles typically weigh 30–60 lb each. Ours are 40 lb per handle, so 200 lb per hand means 160 lb of plates on each handle.
